Read David French in 12/11 NYTimes for a different take on Wray’s resignation. The law won’t let Trump appoint Patel as interim director. Patel doesn’t meet the requirements. A strategic resignation.
We will do well to remember Peter's comments. The first act of any tyrant or would be tryant is to rewrite the history of their ascension to power. There is a basic human need not to mention a governmental necessity for the public in general to believe in the legitimacy of the those who govern. Otherwise there would be constant civil war. This need, however, does not erase our obligation to remember what we saw and what we felt. If anything, it will help us retain our skeptism of future grand statements and actions and in doing so, help curb some of the more outlandish acts and provocations.
I like coming back to Orwell when things look really bleak. Great writer, and all...Even Orwell couldn't fully flesh out the possibly multi versions of our universe and the singularity we face here on earth. Nothing is certain these days. Meditate. Promote love and compassion. Grow good melons and grapes and get on with it...Namaste...Amen...
Orwell also wrote: “Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else.” I'm not sure that I can believe the current reality that Trump supporters believe.
In fairness, it is not Orwell who asserts this, but a character:
“Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else. Not in the individual mind, which can make mistakes, and in any case soon perishes: only in the mind of the Party, which is collective and immortal”.
Writers have characters articulate many viewpoints with which the writers do not necessarily endorse.
Of course, for each of us, all we know of the universe is in the kilo of mush that never sees the light of day. But all the light we cannot see is real.
For an individual, such a solipsistic viewpoint is sophomoric; for a party, it is tyrannical. I doubt Orwell sought to endorse it.
Really!? That is certainly a possibility. I agree with you that the current Trump supporter may be living in a parallel Universe and we may wake up one day realizing we missed the boat. The current objective in this universe, according to my objective guides, is that we, as a human experiment need to gather around those who believe in life on the blessed Gaia and those who dont. But, it's deeper than that. We need to celebrate life throughout the Universe, and not fear it...Blessings
