Mamdani has the spark, that's for sure. And by partnering and cross-endorsing with Brad Lander, he helped (a bit) to reduce the negatives some voters feel with regard to Muslims.
I'm delighted he's shaken up the Democratic establishment, and panicked Republicans.
While articulate passion helps candidates get elected, and while passion helps an incumbent get things done, it does not guarantee that the right candidate gets elected, or that the right things get done. Passion can be an obstacle to reason and judgment; it can get the wrong things done.
Clinton was the most qualified presidential candidate of this millennium; maybe ever. It's a tragedy she was too much of a nerd for the electorate. I mean, too much of a nerd for the Electoral College.
"Mamdani’s opponents will try to reduce him to a caricature, some mutant offspring of Jeremy Corbyn and Yahya Sinwar. They will say they’re doing it for the Jews, and plenty of Jews will believe them. But don’t forget that the vision of this city at the heart of Mamdani’s campaign — a city that embraces immigrants and hates autocrats, that’s at once earthy and cosmopolitan — is one that many Jews, myself included, find inspiring. He won in part because he is so obviously a product of the New York we love."
Mamdani was clearly supported by young voters, which gives me hope for our country. For years, Americans have said they want health care for all! Daycare for working families! A living wage, not a "minimum wage" which requires two to work 50-80 hours a week to survive. I laugh when I hear anyone say we are the "richest country" in the world, when that wealth is only for the top 2%, while more than 50% on the bottom struggle to survive.
Republicans are alarmed by Mandani and have been attacking him for being a Muslim, which they apparently consider equivalent to being a terrorist. By that standard, so is being a trump supporter. Over the last decade, Islamist extremists were responsible for 18% of the domestic extremist-related killings in the U.S. Right-wing extremists were responsible for 76%.
There are national Democrats who present well that we should be promoting. Cory Booker certainly fits the bill. So does Jeff Merkley for that matter, but I don’t get the impression that he’d be interested in running for president.
Promote Merkley. Please no, let him take his big pension and leave.
You are wrong to critically highlight his religion. That is not his calling card. Socialism, baby he wants to use everyone else's money to fix stupid liberal spending in NY.
I had the opportunity to see Hillary Clinton when she was a senator from New York. She gave a speech at a gathering of several hundred women from all over the country. The most impressive thing about her speech was that she did not appear to have any notes. She spoke about wide-ranging issues in what I would describe as "lecture mode". When it was time for questions I was in awe. It was clear she was on top of every issue at the time, regardless of the state or states that were affected. Her answers were detailed; her interest and (dare I say) "feelings" were obvious. This is a side of Hillary Clinton that most people did not get to see, unfortunately.
I also listened to Bill Clinton when he was campaigning for Al Gore and some of the things he said left a lasting impression.
It's unfortunate that charisma has become more important than qualifications but that's where we are so we'll just have to deal with it. Mamdani appears to have charisma as well as intelligence. I'm delighted that he has shaken up the good ol' boys from New York and the establishment in general.
Mandani actually campaigned directly to the populace. Not just walking the wing. The length of Manhattan in his last week, but in his great man in the street campaign on TikTok. He got out the young voter because he spoke to the young voter. I certainly don't agree with all of its policies either. But I agree with some of them. I probably would have voted for him if I had been in New York City.
Peter, I'm afraid we are a ''showbizz" society now, probably since Ronald Reagan. I do agree that Mamdani is energizing to listen to. It'll be interesting to see if his policies are modified as he tries to govern a very diverse city. I hope the Dems can come up with some others who are smart, articulate, compassionate and inspiring.
Mr. Mamdani obviously doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I love the way so-called conservatives blabber about him without actually saying anything. And that’s just one small measure of their well-deserved panic.
Hello Mike! It's not that evident to low IQ people like me to know if it is beautiful or ugly. Going to have to rely on a vote of our chosen representatives and the next few years of 47's winning strategies. Patience is a virtue🤞
Hi Lynn! It just depends on point of view. If taking from the poor, giving to the rich and depriving people of their healthcare coverage appeals to you, it will be beautiful.
I am not convinced that is true. Forgive me, but I am not taking as true the dems spin on the big beautiful/ugly bill. You know you dems lied to us for 4 years about the 'biden' accomplishments. I am anticipating medicaid recipients will be those as covered under the original intent of the program. Not the legion of unintended takers which may be the cause of the the lack of funds for the needy. The SSA site details the intended covered group(s).
Another example of the dearth of candidates offered to voters. He's got something...must be Trump-like or Trump-lite? Again confirms that elections are emotional events, while the governance which follows is not. Good luck, NYC. You're going to need it.

Here's a fine piece by Michelle Goldberg (gift link):

These anti American nut cases help turn liberals into a conservatives. Good for us😄

I don't think America is ready for a vegan president. I'd love to be proven wrong.
Booker's passion is too gentle to be perceived by many. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.
A few years ago, I wore a Warren/Merkley button. America was not ready for an academic and an environmentalist; too bad.
Too bad, indeed.
Promote Merkley. Please no, let him take his big pension and leave.

Sage comments. Not a legitimate candidate for any neighborhood in America but rather a dismal distraction.

No panic here. You libbers need to boot him out before he takes you down. Worst thing for NY best thing for the GOP.
If Republicans ever manage to pass their butt ugly bill, it will take a lot more than fear of Mamdani to keep the whackos in power.

Compared to the challenges facing the U.S. under a criminal madman with imperial ambitions, NYC has it made in a shade.
