I hadn't been aware of Trump's pre-invasion move in Panama though it's not surprising. "Like" seems the wrong response though I very much like your informative and well-written column. I am just so sick of this ignorant, feckless bully. Maybe my next protest sign will be "Panama for the Panamanians".

I think we all knew that Democracy was vulnerable, but Trump is revealing every vulnerability, most of which we did not know existed. We have an uneducated, cruel madman as president and an incompetent, mean-spirited cabinet eager to do anything that will please the tyrant and get their names and photographs in the news. Congress is impotent when it comes to stopping the insanity and willing to enact policies that are hurting people in the worst ways. It seems the tyrant is intent on destroying the US and every country exept Russia, simply because he can.

Dang. I really hate having to "heart" such a dreadful story. But well-said.

Count me among the "sentimental fools" who that know the world is not always arranged by might, unfettered. And among those who believe in working to bend the moral arc of the universe towards justice.

Years ago,I had a pathologist colleague from Columbia whose family still resented the gunboat diplomacy that stole what is now Panama from Columbia, and the forced "negotiation" that allowed us to lease the Canal. I'm sure they are not alone; and further conquest by the U.S. will poison our standing the world for generations to come. Some people like Trump and Putin are just fine with bearing the moral opprobrium of the rest of the world; they even relish it.

Trump lacks any semblance of a conscience, knowledge of history or interest in the values that inspired the founding of our nation. His mindless babbling and erratic behavior are symptoms of senility. Welcome to MAGA world – psychotic, ignorant and demented.

Speaking of Trum; and his MAGAfest destiny, Greenland is a territory of Denmark, a NATO member. If our psycho in chief decides to invade it, won’t we be at war with NATO?

The “Thousand-Year Reich” last 12 years. We’ll see how long Trump’s lasts.

Totally different topic: I am wondering how much the litigation related to the Trump administration’s many actions and orders is costing us taxpayers. They disrespect the rule of law and we are stuck with the bill. Is there any way we can just bill the bully?

On February 15, 1898, the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Maine blew up in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, resulting in the deaths of nearly 300 sailors. In the coming weeks, the newspapers of William Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer competed to drum up war fever earning themselves the epithet of “yellow journalism.” No one knows whether it was an accident, false flag operation, or a Cuban rebel attack. But the result was the Spanish-American War, a final frenzy of Manifest Destiny. Or, so it seemed. Now Trump will fabricate an excuse (like Putin and the Ukraine and Hitler and Poland) and use it to retake the Panama Canal. I doubt Panamanians will be happy.

The reactionary pendulum, swinging toward its apogee, will force US service personnel stationed in the Panama Zone to the depredations of yellow fever. Forgetting history, they'll DENY the genius of Dr. Gorgas and Walter Reed (https://www.texasstandard.org/stories/the-doctor-who-made-the-panama-canal-possible), DELAY effective intervention, and DEFEND Mr. Kennedy's specious claims for the efficacy of methylene blue and raw milk.

Sounds like the Monroe Doctrine is alive and well.
