I fell for this scam a year ago. It came from someone who coincidentally guest posted on your blog. In it the email said he was in Central America, his granddaughter's graduation was that week and she hoped he could get her a laptop for college. I lost $200 and wised-up at the second request.

Thank you for the tip on how to verify the sender by email address.

Speaking of scams, now Trump is collecting money for Trump phones that don’t even exist yet but may be available in August or September. The slap-dash web page has numerous errors, from a processor section that doesn’t list a processor, RAM that’s described as storage, and the boast of a “5000mAh long life camera,” when it presumably means the battery. So many scams! Don’t be like Trump’s chumps and fall for them.

I learned years ago to never let my credit card out of my sight. A motel clerk took my card to run the charges (supposedly) but the next day made purchases using the information. I was able to contest the charges but it's time-consuming. I was at a winery recently and wasn't paying attention when the waitress took my card away briefly. She booked two rooms at a motel in California. I was able to get the charges cancelled but had to go through the tedious process of changing recurring payments because my card was replaced. I informed the owner of the winery but I don't think she believed that her wait staff was responsible. I will be more careful from now on.

The Josephine County Democratic Party has been subject of this scam for a while, over two different Chairs. The scammer sends out an email supposedly from the Chair saying she is very busy at a conference and can't call, but wants to present some hard-working volunteers with gift cards. I don't know where the scammer gets our private email addresses since officers use the Party's website email addresses. The scammer asks if the email recipient can buy the gift cards and send them to a certain address. Reimbursement will follow. I got one of these and it sounded fishy so I called our Chair and she said she had nothing to do with that. We put out an alert to all our members not to fall for it and as far as I know none have. Since the first one concerning a former Chair, our current Chair has been named in similar emails. We ran a piece in our newsletter warning people not to fall for it. I just wondered if other organizations have been targeted as well.
